High-protein meals with a protein shake
Meal preps with substance

High-protein meals
at work

On a floor where people lift, walk or train, there is usually something to eat, just not enough. A cheese sandwich will not carry a warehouse operative through an eight-hour shift. A survey will not show it; the afternoon will. Anyone who wants to fix it runs into one practical wall: everything high in protein has to stay chilled.

Why it falls down

Protein is exactly
what needs chilling

Chicken, tuna, eggs, dairy, pulses, fresh dishes: these are precisely the products that need a cold chain. Anything that can sit on a shop floor without cooling is dry and long-life, and then you end up with biscuits, crisps and bars.

That is why the offer on most sites drifts towards snacks by itself, even where people want something else. It is rarely the buyer’s fault and almost always down to what was technically possible in that corridor without cooling. With a chilled fridge that limit goes, and only then does a proper portion become an option.

What people do now
  • Meal prep at home: works, until the day it does not
  • Bar or shake: fine as a snack, too little as a meal
  • Petrol-station sandwich: quick, but light
  • Driving off: costs half an hour of the day
  • Skipping it: the afternoon pays the price

What is available
on the floor

Four ways a high-protein portion reaches the workplace, and where each one gets stuck.

Route Replaces a meal Available out of hours Where it gets stuck
Bringing your own meal prep Yes Yes, if people remembered Falls apart with late or double shifts
Bars and shakes from the machine No Yes Stays a snack
Canteen or caterer Yes No Closed for early, late and night shifts
Chilled fridge with meal preps Yes Yes, day and night Only pays off with enough people on the floor

The bottom row is what we make. If there are thirty of you in office hours with a shop round the corner, a fridge is probably unnecessary, and we will say so on the call.

What a high-protein
range contains

Full meals

Hot dishes and bowls with chicken, beef, fish, tofu or pulses, meant to replace a lunch or a night-time meal.

Lighter portions

Salads with egg or tuna, skyr, quark, nuts. For people who want something smaller after training or between two shifts.

For the whole team

Halal, kosher, vegetarian and vegan versions in the same fridge, clearly labelled, so nobody on the shift misses out.

Nutritional values and allergens are on every pack. We do not give nutrition advice. For individual needs, we refer to a dietitian or your occupational health doctor.

How to set it up

High-protein meals weigh differently from snacks and drinks in purchasing and rotation. How that feeds into the cost is covered in what a smart fridge costs.

About high-protein
food at work

Who is a high-protein offer at work useful for?

Mainly sites where people do physical work or train: warehousing, manufacturing, construction-related services, care with a lot of walking, fitness. There, a sandwich around noon often is not enough to last until the end of the shift, and you notice it in the afternoon. In an office it is less general, but there is almost always a group that pays attention to it.

How much protein should such a meal contain?

That differs from person to person, and it is not a question we answer: ask a dietitian or your occupational health doctor. What matters is that the nutritional values are readable on every pack, so people can see for themselves what they are taking. We do not give nutrition advice.

Do people not just bring their own meal prep?

Some do, and that will stay the same. But it falls away on exactly the days it is needed: an unexpected late shift, a double shift, or simply when it did not happen that morning. An offer on site is the safety net for those days. For people who meal prep themselves, a fridge where their box is safe matters just as much as the offer itself.

Why can an ordinary vending machine not do this?

Because high-protein portions almost always have to stay chilled: chicken, tuna, eggs, dairy, pulses. A classic spiral machine is built for dry, long-life products, and it drops them too. What is left in terms of protein is bars and shakes. Useful as a snack, not as a meal.

Does this work at night and at shift changes?

Yes, and that is often where the difference is biggest. A chilled fridge is accessible day and night, even when there is no canteen, no shop and no supplier running any more. For night shifts, a hot, filling portion at the right time is often the only realistic alternative to what is in the vending machine.
