An operator is the one who calls when the machine is empty, or does not. They install the machine, buy stock, restock and fix faults, and they make their money on what sells. How well they do it shows in what is still in the machine at three in the afternoon.
You buy a vending machine once. Keeping it well stocked for two years then takes a hundred small decisions about what to order, when to fill and what to take out. An operator takes those decisions off your hands. How that compares with buying and running it yourself is covered in automated retail for business.
Anyone who does not want an operator but does not want to invest either often looks for something in between. What renting means in practice is in renting a smart fridge.
Whether an operator is good mostly comes down to follow-up. A good one quickly notices that a product is not selling and then actually changes the range.
| Classic vending operator | Smart fridge, run by you or an operator | |
|---|---|---|
| Range | Dry and long-life | Fresh, high-protein, halal possible, snacks and drinks |
| Restocking round | Often on a fixed schedule | Based on what actually sold |
| What does not sell | Little, as it keeps for long | With whoever carries the stock |
| View of sales | Varies by machine | Per product, reported back |
| What it gives you | A snack | A meal, also outside hours |

A night shift facing an empty fridge is usually an organisational problem; how to sort it out is covered in food for the night shift. On a site with many drivers, the location decides who can reach the fridge; see logistics and transport.

We make the fridges and sell, rent or lease them, with software and support. You run the fridge yourself, or through an operator or caterer of your choice; because the fridge is yours, you can change who restocks it without changing the machine. Are you an operator yourself, looking for fridges to place with clients? See running smart fridges yourself. Do you make meals and want a fridge for your customers? See meal prep for business.
What a fridge costs depends on the route you choose; the factors are in what a smart fridge costs.
From sales. With a placed machine, the operator buys stock, carries what does not sell and covers their costs from what is bought. That is why they adjust the range to what actually sells.
The operator proposes and adjusts to sales, but you have a say. If you want halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan or a particular balance between healthy and classic, agree that with your operator at the start.
That depends on your agreement with your current operator. With a fridge you own or rent, you can change who restocks it without replacing the machine.
A manufacturer: we produce the smart fridges and sell, rent or lease them, with software and support. Running the fridge and supplying the food is done by you or an operator or caterer of your choice.
