On a former coking and coal site on the Sheffield–Rotherham border, the Advanced Manufacturing Park now hosts around a hundred companies and some 2,000 skilled workers in research and production. Along the Lower Don Valley, steel and engineering firms still work in shifts. The tradition has changed, the problem of a decent meal at the end of a late shift hasn't.
The Advanced Manufacturing Park grew around university research centres and now forms part of what has been called an advanced manufacturing innovation district, with Sheffield Business Park and the Lower Don Valley. Around a hundred companies work there, from global engineering groups to specialist suppliers, many with production and test facilities that run in shifts. In the Lower Don Valley, steelmaking and forging continue alongside new industrial schemes planned near Meadowhall. Sheffield also has two universities and large teaching hospitals with staff on duty day and night. On the industrial sites, the nearest food is usually a drive away.
